    Description

Major General George Owen Squier [1865 1934] began his military career in 1887 and was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and World War I. General Squier was also a noted scientist and inventor who saw early on the impact airplanes would have in the military. In 1907 while serving as the executive officer of the Signal Corps, Aeronautical Division, the ancestor of the U.S. Air Force, Squire was instrumental in developing the specifications which were required for the purchase of the first military airplanes. Squire worked directly with the Wright Brothers and on September 12, 1908, he became the first U.S. military passenger to fly in an airplane [with Orville Wright] and was responsible for the purchase of the first airplanes by the U.S. Army in 1909. In 1916 Squire was appointed as the Chief of the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps and served throughout World War I. Listed for auction is a [DS] document signed by General George Owen Squier. The document is a bank check drawn upon the The Riggs National Bank. The check is dated Feb 11, 1899, completed entirely in his hand and is signed ''Geo. Q. Squier'' in black fountain pen. The check measures 7.00 x 3.00 inches and is in fine condition. The autograph is authentic, rare to obtain and is an desirable example of this noted aviation pioneer and will be a great addition to any aviation collection. We have listed the autographs of other noted aviators and explorers, along with a nice collection of military, astronaut and political autographs.
